I really wanted to see this movie after seeing the first preview:
Adam Sandler is his best in dramatic roles with a side of humor, and Uncut Gems looks like nothing I’ve seen in theaters lately. My excitement increased as the rave reviews rolled in. Uncut Gems was nothing I expected to see. In the end, it became nothing I actually wanted to see. Although, I did enjoy parts of the ride along the way. Adam Sandler’s acting was some of his best. Unfortunately, Uncut Gems was overall not a cut above the rest.
For me, Uncut Gems was over hyped and under delivered. The good news is that in a sea of reboots, sequels, and adaptations, the movie is unique. As soon as you become aware of the depths of Howard’s gambling addiction, the movie becomes a thriller. I was on the edge of my seat wondering when Howard would get got by his bookies. However, after a tense 2 hours, I still left the film unfulfilled. Was the film social commentary on sports gambling or on gambling addiction in general? Were we supposed to gleam insight on the jewelry industrial complex? Are we just supposed to go along on this thrill ride and relive the glory days when Obama was President and anything was possible? Maybe it’s supposed to be all of the above.
Overall Opinion
Although I enjoyed parts of Uncut Gems, I felt underwhelmed with it all as the credits rolled. I fell for the marketing hype, but you don’t have to. If you really want to see the film, go on a discount day. Otherwise, wait to stream it at home because Uncut Gems doesn’t shine bright like a diamond. Rating: Kettle Korn
